David Abram: Animism, Perception, and the Spell of the Sensuous
"The breathing earth is our primary text, the first scripture from which all others derive."
-David Abram
Modern societies often view nature as background to human life rather than as a living presence. David Abram, a cultural ecologist and philosopher, has devoted his work to renewing animism — the recognition that the earth is alive and communicative. Through his books and teachings, he shows that perception itself is ecological, shaped by the living landscapes that surround us.
David Abram is an American cultural ecologist, philosopher, and magician. He studied philosophy and ecology and traveled widely to learn from Indigenous traditions, particularly in Southeast Asia. His background in sleight-of-hand magic gave him a unique sensitivity to perception, illusion, and the unseen. He is the founder of the Alliance for Wild Ethics, an organization that fosters cultural transformation through story, philosophy, and ecological practice.
His major works include The Spell of the Sensuous (1996) and Becoming Animal (2010). Both books weave phenomenology, ecology, and myth to argue that language, imagination, and culture are rooted in our sensory relationship with the earth.
Abram teaches that the world is animate and that human perception is meant for dialogue with this more-than-human community. He emphasizes that language, story, and imagination are ecological forces, shaping how we relate to land, animals, and the elements.
Teachings
Animism Renewed: recognition of the world as alive and communicative.
Ecology of Perception: the senses are shaped by and respond to the living earth.
Language as Ecology: stories and words are grounded in the land.
Becoming Animal: human identity is intertwined with the larger animal world.
Abram’s vision is lived through practices of attentiveness and storytelling. Walking barefoot on the earth, listening to the voices of wind and water, or crafting stories that honor the land are ways of embodying his teaching. Communities that gather to share ecological stories or practice rituals of attentiveness enact his call to renew animism in modern culture.
We honor David Abram for restoring animism to philosophy and for showing that the living earth speaks through every breath and gesture. His work reminds us that to perceive the world with wonder is to enter into dialogue with the more-than-human community.
